Frequently Asked Questions:

How can Distance Education help me reach my educational goals?

Rural and extended campus students may complete an associate of applied science degree (AAS) in Human Services (HUMS) without moving to a main campus location. All 63 credit hours required for the degree are available by a statewide distance delivery system. All you need is a phone, computer and internet connection. Practicum placements will be coordinated locally unless you wish to experience a different location and agency.

Do I have to travel at all for classes?

No. You can take most of 63 credits by 'Distance Delivery.'

Is financial aid available for 'Distance Education'?

Yes. You are encouraged to apply for financial aid both at UAF and with your employer. Many employers will prepay or reimburse the cost of attending classes which increase your skills and competencies in your field.

What if I'm not comfortable using the computer or if my village doesn't have a high speed internet connection?

As your instructor, I spend as much time as needed, assisting all students to learn both the class material and technology needed to attend classes. Students are usually amazed at how much they enjoy using the internet and creating connections to others throughout Alaska.

Someone told me that they took a 'Distance' class and there were no other students in the class. Will there be students in my classes?

There are some classes that are "asynchronous" at UAF. However the classes you take with Human Services are 'synchronous' with other students. Most classes have 8-12 students.

What classes should I take first?

If you are new to the Human Services AAS degree program it's best to take HUMS 101 Introduction to Human Services and HUMS 102 Standards of Practice.

Contact Lara and she will 'advise' you on mapping out your educational goals.
